On June 12th, self-storage company Quraz (headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo; CEO: Steve Spohn) released the findings of the company’s 2025 Self-Storage Market Survey, highlighting continued growth in the trunk room (both indoor and outdoor self-storage) sector across Japan.

The nationwide survey targeted major operators and was conducted between January and March 2025.
According to the report, the market has expanded for 16 consecutive years since the survey began in 2008, reaching a record size of ¥85 billion in 2025.
The ongoing reduction in residential living space - especially in urban centers - has contributed to a growing demand for additional storage, with the market projected to surpass ¥100 billion by 2027, reaching an estimated ¥103.7 billion.
The number of self-storage locations across Japan exceeded 14,860 in fiscal 2024, surpassing the number of family restaurants nationwide (10,025).
Total available units also hit a record high, with 626,418 rooms now in operation.
In the non-Tokyo prefecture suburbs – including the prefectures of Saitama, Chiba as well as the cities of Yokohama, Kawasaki, and Atsugi as measured in this survey - the number of self-storage facilities has risen to around 3,500, more than triple the approximately 1,100 recorded in 2008.
