Nagano Prefecture is one of Japan’s most important sake-producing regions, known for its pristine water, mountain-grown rice, and centuries-old brewing traditions.

In 2021, this reputation was formally recognized with the establishment of GI Nagano - a Geographical Indication marking that certifies the sake is made exclusively within the prefecture under strict standards.

GI (Geographical Indication) Nagano is a government-certified label that guarantees the authenticity and quality of sake produced in Nagano.

To qualify for this designation, a sake must meet the following key criteria:

  • The sake must be brewed using 100% rice grown in Nagano Prefecture.

  • The water used for brewing must be sourced entirely from within Nagano.

  • All production processes - rice polishing, fermentation, and bottling - must take place within the prefecture.

  • Each product must pass a professional sensory evaluation that judges aroma, flavor, balance, and overall quality.

These requirements are designed to ensure that only sake genuinely reflective of Nagano’s environment and traditions can carry the GI Nagano mark.

According to the organization, it’s more than just a label - it’s a promise of regional character, high standards, and craftsmanship.

The certification builds on Nagano’s long-standing efforts to preserve the integrity of its food and drink products. Since 2002, the prefecture has operated an Origin Certification Management System that promotes transparency in regional food labeling.

GI Nagano continues this legacy, providing an easy way for consumers and international buyers to identify truly local sake that meets strict quality standards.

What makes Nagano’s sake unique is the combination of natural resources and regional expertise. The prefecture is home to dozens of local rice varieties - such as Miyama Nishiki and Hitogokochi - developed specifically for sake brewing in mountain climates.

With access to soft, mineral-rich water and a climate ideal for fermentation, Nagano brewers have refined a style known for its smooth, well-balanced taste.

By choosing sake with the GI Nagano designation, you’re not just choosing quality - you’re experiencing the flavor of Nagano’s land, water, and culture in every sip.
