With a history dating back over 1,400 years, Zenkoji Temple offers a profound blend of spiritual heritage, cultural tradition, and timeless architecture.

The Legacy of Zenkoji Temple

Founded in the 7th century, Zenkoji Temple enshrines what is believed to be the first Buddhist statue ever brought to Japan - an image of Amida Buddha from the Korean kingdom of Baekje.

This statue, known as a hibutsu (hidden Buddha), is never shown to the public. However, a replica is revealed during the famous Gokaicho event held every six to seven years, drawing massive crowds.

Unique Spiritual Experiences at Zenkoji Temple

One of the most unique features of Zenkoji Temple is the Okaidan Meguri, a completely dark underground tunnel beneath the main hall. Visitors walk through in total darkness, searching by hand for the “key to paradise” mounted on the wall.

This symbolic journey represents moving toward enlightenment.

Each morning, visitors can also join the O-Asaji ceremony, a traditional prayer service held at sunrise. This daily ritual is led by the temple’s head priest or priestess and includes blessings and the sharing of Buddhist teachings.
