Wood frame single family home seismic resistance manual released by Japan's MLIT

On August 23rd, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) published their "Manual for Ensuring the Safety of Wooden Houses."

The manual aims to promote further earthquake resistance of homes by providing strategies to reduce risks from earthquakes, even in cases where comprehensive seismic retrofitting is not feasible.

The manual is divided into three sections:

  • Section I outlines the support systems available for promoting earthquake resistance, including seismic assessments, reinforcement design, and financing options for renovations.

  • Section II focuses on strategies to reduce earthquake risks, such as partial renovation work and lifestyle adjustments.

  • Section III compiles everyday preparedness measures, including furniture stabilization and the installation of shelf stoppers.

The complete manual is available in PDF format below in Japanese only.
