A new collaboration between the Karuizawa Hoshino Area resort district and Shinano Railway will bring a culinary twist to sightseeing rail travel in central Japan.
Beginning in May 2026, the partners will launch a seasonal dining experience aboard the Rokumon sightseeing train, combining regional cuisine with panoramic rail journeys through Nagano Prefecture.

The initiative introduces a concept described as a “Seasonal Gourmet Cruise,” where passengers enjoy a multi-course meal prepared by restaurants in the Karuizawa Hoshino Area while traveling along one of Shinshu’s most scenic railway routes.
Organizers say the program is designed to highlight local food culture while encouraging visitors to explore the wider Karuizawa region.
A Culinary Rail Journey Through Shinshu
The first event in the series is scheduled for May 31, 2026, departing from Karuizawa Station and traveling through the Shinano Railway network before returning later in the afternoon.
For the debut edition, the onboard dining program will be created by Karuizawa Hotel Bleston Court, a resort hotel known for its French-inspired cuisine and long association with the Hoshino Area hospitality group.

The spring menu will feature dishes prepared with ingredients sourced from the Shinshu region, reflecting the early-summer landscape that defines the Karuizawa highlands.
Passengers will be served a multi-course meal while traveling through the countryside, pairing local flavors with views of the mountains and forests surrounding the route.
Blending Hospitality and Rail Tourism
The partnership brings together two organizations that play important roles in Nagano’s tourism ecosystem.
The Karuizawa Hoshino Area has developed into one of Japan’s most recognizable resort districts, offering accommodations, dining, and nature-based experiences centered around Karuizawa’s historic hot-spring area. Shinano Railway, meanwhile, operates the regional rail line connecting Karuizawa with Nagano and other communities across the prefecture.
By combining hospitality and rail tourism, the two partners aim to create a travel experience that encourages visitors to spend more time in the region rather than simply passing through on day trips.
Seasonal Dining Concepts Planned Throughout the Year
The May event will serve as the first in a planned series of seasonal gourmet journeys. Future editions are expected to feature menus created by other restaurants and culinary brands within the Hoshino Area, introducing passengers to a variety of dining styles.

Planned offerings will range from casual regional fare to refined Japanese cuisine paired with local sake, allowing repeat visitors to experience different aspects of Shinshu’s food culture depending on the season.
Details for summer and later seasonal departures will be announced at a later date.
The Rokumon Sightseeing Train
The Rokumon sightseeing train began operating in 2014 as a tourism-focused service highlighting the landscapes and heritage of Nagano Prefecture. The train runs primarily between Karuizawa and Nagano, with journeys lasting roughly two hours.
Its interiors were designed by well-known Japanese railway designer Eiji Mitooka, using locally sourced wood to create a warm, traditional atmosphere. The train’s deep red exterior references the historical Sanada clan, whose legacy is closely associated with the region.
Large windows and lounge spaces allow passengers to enjoy views of Mount Asama and the surrounding highlands, making the train a popular option for visitors seeking a slower, scenic travel experience.
Karuizawa’s Growing Appeal as a Resort Destination
The launch of the gourmet train program reflects broader efforts to position Karuizawa and the surrounding Shinshu region as a year-round travel destination. Once known primarily as a summer retreat, the area now attracts visitors across all seasons thanks to its mix of nature, hot springs, restaurants, and cultural attractions.
By pairing these resort offerings with unique rail journeys, the new collaboration aims to deepen visitor engagement with the region and showcase Nagano’s culinary and cultural heritage.
