BOJ rate hike set to affect savers and borrowers differently

Japan’s latest interest rate increase is expected to hit younger borrowers hardest, even though households overall are projected to benefit from higher returns on savings.

Households headed by people in their 30s are estimated to face a net annual cost increase of ¥21,000 following the Bank of Japan’s 0.25-percentage-point rate hike, according to an estimate by Naoki Hattori, chief Japan economist at Mizuho Research Institute.

Housing costs are a major reason. People in their 20s to 40s are more likely to carry mortgages and auto loans while holding fewer financial assets than older households.

Variable-rate mortgages are expected to reflect the increase in October. MFS estimates that repayments on a ¥50 million, 35-year mortgage at a 1% interest rate would rise by about ¥6,000 a month if the rate increases by 0.25 percentage points.

The household sector is expected to fare better. Hattori estimates the rate hike will produce a net annual benefit of about ¥1 trillion, or roughly ¥20,000 per household, as higher interest income outweighs increased loan payments in aggregate.

Japan’s three megabanks have announced increases in ordinary deposit rates from 0.3% to 0.4%. With household deposits at about ¥1,000 trillion as of December 2025, additional interest income is estimated at around ¥1.5 trillion. Older households, which tend to hold more financial assets, are expected to benefit most.

The result is a clear generational divide. Asset-rich savers gain from higher deposit income, while younger households with mortgages and other debt face rising borrowing costs.

Businesses are also exposed. Hattori estimates the rate increase could reduce recurring profits at Japanese companies outside finance and insurance by around 1%, with the impact approaching 7% for companies with paid-in capital below ¥10 million.

For the housing market, the immediate significance is straightforward: higher rates increase the carrying cost of debt for variable-rate borrowers, even while the household sector overall remains a net beneficiary.
